NATIONAL CERTIFICATE: INTRODUCTION TO THE MINING AND MINERALS SECTOR
Rationale for the Qualification
The National Certificate: Introduction to Mining and Minerals (NQF Level 1) is designed to meet the needs of learners in a variety of environments in the Mining and Minerals Sector. It is a generic qualification that allows for mobility and portability within the sector.
It is the first step towards obtaining a range of qualifications for learners who:

Were previously disadvantaged or who were unable to complete their schooling;

Have worked in the Mining and Minerals Sector for many years, but have no formal qualification in their area of work;

Wish to extend their knowledge and understanding of the Mining and Minerals Sector; and
-
Have recently taken up a position in the Mining and Minerals Sector.
The intention is:

To promote the development of foundational knowledge and competencies that are required in the Mining and Minerals Sector;

To develop the potential of employees in the Mining and Minerals Sector; and
-
To provide opportunities for life long learning for learners who work in the Mining and Minerals Sector where no general formal qualification currently exists.
The National Certificate: Introduction to Mining and Minerals should produce knowledgeable workers who are able to contribute to improved productivity and health and safety within the Mining and Minerals Sector. It should provide the means for current workers to receive recognition of prior learning. The qualification is structured in a way that exposes learners to the different aspects and core business processes of the Mining and Minerals Sector. This qualification is designed to address a critical need in the Mining and Minerals Sector to provide learners with a generic qualification to assist them to overcome the gap between ABET Level 3 and NQF Level 2. It is anticipated that this qualification will promote the notion of lifelong learning.
PURPOSE OF THE QUALIFICATION
This qualification is aimed at persons who work or intend working within a mining and minerals context, and who seek to acquire recognition of essential knowledge regarding the Mining and Minerals Sector and related operations.
Qualified learners will be able to:

Communicate in a variety of ways

Use mathematics in real life situations

Apply elementary knowledge and understanding of scientific concepts

Demonstrate a positive life orientation in terms namely personal, social and workplace skills.

Demonstrate a basic understanding of occupational health and safety issues
-
Demonstrate an overview of the Mining and Minerals
-
Demonstrate a basic understanding of operations in a defined sub sector in the mining and minerals sector.
The respective sub sectors are:

Mining
-
Cement, Lime, Aggregate and Sand (CLAS)
-
Diamond Processing
-
Jewellery Manufacturing
-
Metallurgy
-
Small, Medium and Micro Enterprises (SMMEs).

This qualification introduces a basic understanding of the key terms, rules, concepts and principles of the sub-field Fabrication and Extraction that will enable learners to be informed workers in the Industry.
